A Journey
Richard Chiassaro, who competes mainly in category T54 sprint events and middle-distance events is now a coach currently coaching the Paralympics in Paris. He is also working with Lifestyle & Mobility.
Since 2009, Richard Chiassaro, an Essex native and Paralympian, has been an integral part of wheelchair racing. His determination to compete for Team GB at the Rio 2016 Games was so strong that he continued training after narrowly missing out on the London 2012 Paralympics. Among Richard’s impressive achievements are bronze medals from the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, a gold medal in the 200-metre event, and silver medals in the 100-, 400-, and 800-metre events at the 2016 IPC Athletics European Championships.
I currently hold the British record for the 200m with a time of 24.36 seconds and the World Record for the 400m with a time of 44.39 seconds. My performance in the 800m, with a time of 1:30.35, also stands as a British and European record.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond his own remarkable achievements on the track, Richard Chiassaro is deeply passionate about giving back to the community and nurturing the next generation of talent.
Driven by a desire to share his knowledge and inspire others, Richard regularly visits schools across Essex, using his story to motivate young people, both with and without disabilities, to pursue their goals with confidence and determination.
He also dedicates his time to coaching a wheelchair racing team at Harlow Athletics Club, where he works closely with aspiring athletes, helping them develop their skills, build resilience, and realise their full potential. Through his coaching, Richard is not only shaping athletes but also empowering individuals to break barriers and believe in what’s possible.
