Whether it’s a powerchair, manual wheelchair, or a scooter, storing your mobility product safely is a must. If you want to extend the lifespan of a product, keep it performing as it should be, and protect it from vandalism and theft, read on.
Can I Store My Scooter Outside?
That is one of the questions which we get asked more than any other, here at Lifestyle & Mobility. When it comes to powerchairs or manual wheelchairs (usually too vital to leave outside, conveniently sized enough to store inside, or both) this tends to be less asked. But with mobility scooters, especially the larger ones, many customers are interested in keeping them outside the house. So, what’s the answer? In short, when it comes to storing your mobility product, if you can store it inside, you should.
Yes, an offroad mobility scooter, such as the Scoozy Sterling S800 shown above, may be built to tackle the elements. However, no vehicle benefits from 24/7 exposure to everything the outdoors has to throw at it.
What if There’s Not Enough Room Inside?
There’s two main considerations in this case – protection from the weather, and protection against theft or vandalism. If you have yet to actually choose a scooter or powerchair and are considering storing the product outside, you may want to seriously consider a smaller, or folding option. The peace of mind and protection you will get from doing this shouldn’t be underestimated.
When it comes to protecting your mobility product against theft or vandalism, out of sight is out of mind. Even if you can’t fit a scooter into your house, in a garage, or behind a locked garden gate, are both better choices. Secondly, Lifestyle & Mobility would strongly advise giving serious consideration to a mobility scooter with a removable battery pack. If possible, bringing the battery indoors when the scooter is not in use is a no-brainer. For one thing, it automatically makes stealing the scooter much harder. Small scooters generally have a removable battery pack as standard. But, now, some higher-performance models can also be found with removable batteries. The 8mph off-road ready Baja Bandit shown below left, has a removable battery pack. So does the Motion Healthcare eMove 8, another 8mph scooter, shown below right.
Of course, there are also wet weather storage options available to buy from us in order to take protection of your mobility product further if it does have to remain outside.
