Profiling Beds – Understanding Your Options
28 August 2025 - by Matt Stanfield

Profiling beds, sometimes also referred to as “profiling care beds” are a major investment. Consequently, understanding exactly what it is that you will be getting for your money when you buy one is important. A profiling bed differs from a standard bed in that the parts of the frame beneath the mattress can be electrically adjusted. This powered adjustment is usually carried out by Profiling Beds - Handset handset – such as the one shown on the photo at the right.

Controlled Comfort

Powered adjustment functionality is particularly crucial for best supporting the occupant and distributing pressure more effectively. That distribution of pressure is extremely important. Why? Well, with care beds, the user is generally going to be spending very extended periods of time resting in one. Hence, minimising the risk of pressure sores is a must. When it comes to pressure concerns, mattress choice also plays a big part. It is important to note that mattresses are usually sold separately from profiling beds. A key reason for this is that there are several core types of mattress available with these beds.

Adjustable Height for Transfers and Safety

Continuing on the theme of limited motion, many care bed users will need a bed which allows for easy transfer by carers. So, adjustable height becomes a consideration. Profiling bed height adjustability takes into account that users may need to sleep at a very different height to their daytime level. As the “care beds” aspect of these products’ name indicates, they are tailored for home care or care home environments. So users may, sadly, be suffering with neurodegenerative conditions. That means rolling in the night, particularly where bone and joint conditions also come into play, is a serious concern. Profiling Beds - low riseHence the availability of profiling beds whose heights can be lowered to within a few inches of the floor when needed. The above photo gives an idea of what one of those beds looks like in practice. This massively reduces the risk of injury from falls in the night. The same goes for side rail options, which can protect occupants from falls both day and night.
