As all vehicle – mobility or otherwise – owners know – tyres are important to get right. Choosing between solid or pneumatic tyres is perhaps the biggest decision to make. This is especially the case since many mobility scooters offer you a choice between the two. The Pride Revo 2.0 is one well-known example of this choice. As a notably large boot scooter, the Revo 2.0 falls squarely into the area where pneumatic tyres tend to become an option.

With smaller boot scooters, and folding mobility scooters, pneumatic tyres may well not be an option. This partly has to do with these products being designed for use on flat manmade surfaces, particularly indoor ones, such as shopping centres. In urban areas like that, where the need for the superior comfort which pneumatic tyres offer on rough terrain is outweighed by the risk of punctures by broken glass etc, this makes sense.

When Pneumatic Tyres are the Only Way

If you’re wanting to take your mobility scooter or powerchair off the beaten track, pneumatic tyres may be the only option. Take the TGA Vita X, shown to the left. This obviously rugged, tried-and-tested off-road ready vehicle is solely available from the manufacturer with pneumatic tyres.

Notably, TGA is the only major manufacturer who sell their pneumatic tyres with internal tyre sealant as standard. This product will be drawn to punctures, sealing them off quickly, and reduces their impact. It could be seen as a compromise between the two options, although it is not a 100% failsafe.

What goes for off-roading with scooters goes for off-roading with powerchairs also. Shown below is the Magic Mobility Extreme X8, one of the most rugged powerchairs available to buy in the UK today.
