Anti-tip wheels may not be the most glamourous mobility vehicle safety feature. Regardless, there is a reason why they’re found on nearly every mobility vehicle out there. Even for those within the industry, here at Lifestyle & Mobility, they can still surprise us. Whilst filming some outdoor footage with the LuXe Mobility Xenith Remote Control Powerchair, there was a bit of a surprise.

As you’d expect, we know the importance of anti-tip wheels – but this was still rather impressive:

Whilst this is the result of a happy accident whilst testing remote-control functionality on a folding powerchair – don’t try this at home – it goes to show how the most humble and familiar aspects of a product can dramatically impact user safety.

Anti-Tip Wheels in Day-to-Day Usage

This safety mechanism is mainly for assistance with steeper gradients than a mobility vehicle is rated to handle. Regardless of how hefty a scooter or powerchair may be, or of the gradient capacity, there may come a time when anti-tips are needed. So you’ll be glad to know that these are usually very solidly-built. Case in point is the photo on the right. It’s a good illustration of how solid anti-tip wheel construction tends to be. In that case, this is a take-down powerchair on which these wheels are shown. With the more lightweight powerchairs, given their higher centre of gravity, anti-tips are even more important than they are on mobility scooters. Not, as we’ve said, that mobility scooters skimp on anti-tip safety. At the least, none of the powered mobility vehicles which Lifestyle & Mobility sell, cut corners on safety.
